STAR WARS CELEBRATION: AUTOGRAPH PICKUPS IN ANAHEIM

Star Wars Celebration is a turning point for many autograph collectors, myself included. I started collecting in-person Star Wars autographs four years before my first Celebration, picking up 2-3 a year at my local convention. At my first Celebration in 2010 I came home with over 20. Celebration changes our collection and our collecting, opening our minds and expanding possibilities.

Nothing bores me more in our hobby than the question “how many autographs do you have.” Invariably it leads to competition and one-upmanship. Sharing Celebration autographs doesn’t usually have the same consequences and I have been asked by many to share what I got in Anaheim. More importantly, I want to see what you picked up at Celebration so wherever you are reading this article please share yours as well. I can’t wait to see what you all got.

WEDNESDAY

Craig Miller from “Boonta Eve”

These were the only autographs I managed to buy at “Boonta Eve” despite being one of the organizers. Many thanks to everyone who came out to the show!

THURSDAY

Obi-Wan Kenobi #1 Celebration Exclusive signed David Nakayama Variant from Unknown Comics

The Force guided me directly to the Unknown Comics booth early Thursday morning and they had signed copies of their Celebration exclusive comic. I knew David would not be attending the show and did not expect to see signed copies available. Thrilled to add one to my collection, in addition to the other Unknown Comics Obi-Wan variant covers.

Joonas Suotamo

Some autographs are planned, some aren’t. This one falls in the latter category. I had a great with Joonas and got to spend some time with my good friend Doug who was working with Joonas throughout the weekend.

Malcolm Tween

When the Celebration art was announced I immediately scanned for anything Obi-Wan and immediately purchased this print from Malcolm Tween, which is signed and numbered.

Lateef Crowder

I purchased an autograph ticket for Lateef Crowder when he was announced for Celebration After Hours and had this image for him to sign. Later he was announced for the SWAU party and thankfully I had friends attending who brought my image to get signed while I was at the Obi-Wan Kenobi premiere.

FRIDAY

Ewan McGregor

There was only one name that needed to be on the Celebration autograph hall roster for me to consider Anaheim a success and it was Ewan McGregor. The morning began with his photo op and then my three autographs. I brought an 11×14 and chose two table shots. Having my photo op and autographs on the same day that Obi-Wan Kenobi launches was amazing. The experience was everything I could have hoped for and more.

Tem Morrison

I didn’t give much thought into what I would have Tem sign when I bought the tickets, I just knew they would sell out quickly. While in line I decided I wanted one from The Mandalorian and one from The Book of Boba Fett.

Dee Bradley Baker and Michelle Ang

These were among the last autograph tickets I purchased before leaving for the show. I decided it was too good an opportunity to get them both on a Bad Batch shot to pass up. I went to Dee first and he had great pen selection and asked him to choose which he felt would be best.

Michelle was a bit tougher to get as she wasn’t at her table for much of the day. She recognized that she didn’t have the same pen selection as Dee but had one red paint pen on her table which didn’t work very well on the shot.

Matthew Wood

Another autograph ticket I bought without any thought of what I would have him sign. The moment I told Kevin Liell I wanted Grievous as the logo for Star Wars Autograph News because of his line “Your lightsabers will make a fine addition to my collection” I’ve had a special appreciation for Matt and his work. It wasn’t until I got to his table that it was clear I needed something from The Book of Boba Fett.

SATURDAY

Matt Lanter

There was only one image I wanted from Matt Lanter this year and I wasn’t sure they’d have it. He did not have this shot from The Mandalorian at Rhode Island Comic Con late in 2021 but was very happy when I learned it was on his table.

Katy O’Brian

I knew Katy was scheduled to attend Rhode Island Comic Con but decided to get a ticket for him in Anaheim. She had some nice images to choose from and sounds like she’s in going to be back in season three of The Mandalorian.

Rupert Friend

Another guest I knew would be attending Rhode Island Comic Con but wanted to get in Anaheim. He used a great pen but would have gone with a different color with that background. He was chatting with everyone and was very nice. I thought it was a nice touch having him announce the next Celebration will be in London next April.

Karen Hallion

I spent some time waiting for Malcolm to return to his table to pick up my print and took the opportunity to take photos in the Dark Ink artist area. While in Karen Hallion’s area I noticed she was signing Ashley Eckstein cards she was giving away.

W. Earl Brown

Until Obi-Wan launched there were only two Star Wars projects I was collecting anything and everything: Rogue One and The Mandalorian. That made W. Earl Brown a must-get for me.

Don Bies

I have wanted Don Bies autograph for a very long time. I was able to get him in a private signing last year on the Boba Fett shot from the Special Edition of Return of the Jedi. I wanted to get him on my Fett 11×14 project and that is what I intended to have him sign in Anaheim. As you can see below that did not happen because I forgot the Fett print at home…

SUNDAY

Kelly Marie Tran

First time Celebration signer at the right price and this was a no-brainer for me. Wonderful interactions with people in her line while I was there and a few nice table images to choose from. Another nice pen choice but she may have needed a thinner tip for his signature.

Billie Lourd

When I saw this image available for Bilie Lourd I didn’t need to see any others, it was the only one I wanted. Unfortunately she sold out of autograph tickets before I bought one and I thought I missed my chance. Thanks to a good friend, and the will of the Force, I was surprised with this gift after the show.
