Zachery McGinnis from Galactic Productions is our featured guest writer today and gives us a glimpse into what it was like bringing his clients to some of the first conventions to take place in the year since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many thanks to Zach for sharing his thoughts and experiences with us.
“One year ago this very weekend I was at La Mole in Mexico City. That was the last convention that myself and the majority of my clients physically attended. The world we knew then vs the world we know now is a completely different Galaxy.
Since then the convention industry has adapted and gone virtual. Our clients and their fans have had great online experiences with a variety of online platforms especially Galaxy Con LIVE.
This week we’re back in action and on the road again in the great state of Texas. Thursday we kicked everything off at Madness Games & Comics in Plano, TX with Dickey Beer, stuntman extraordinaire best known for his portrayal as Boba Fett in Return of the Jedi and first time signer Dmitriy Karas, creature performer and stuntman from The Mandalorian. Of course the fans came out to have Dickey sign all their Boba Fett merchandise not to mention the awesome posters on which they’ve been accumulating autographs on for decades. It’s always fun to watch the fans meet Boba Fett!
Equally as cool, is watching the younglings, fans of The Mandalorian come out to meet Dmitriy and start their collections. Dmitriy portrayed 7 characters throughout seasons 1 and 2 of The Mandalorian. He’s been a variety of troopers (storm & scout), but he’s the only one to shoot/stun Baby Yoda! As various Tusken Raiders the Krayt Dragon spit acid on him, swallowed him whole, however in the end Dmitriy won by finding the Krayt Dragons Pearl. You should hear what he is doing in…. Oh wait I can’t talk about that yet. Just know there is more to come! We’re looking forward to having him at many events once the world gets back to normal and he is looking forward to meeting you! The owners of Madness Games and Comics, Chris Mettler and Chris Hoberg have been friends and supports of Galactic since day one in 2006, we thank them for hosting so many of our clients over the years and helping us with socially distant safe appearances during the past several months.
Friday morning David Fielding, Zordon of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers met Dickey, Dmitriy and I at the Galactic command center and we morphed our way to Midland, TX at lightspeed for Permian Basin Comic Con. The 5 hour drive was like a panel. We all were sharing stories from the road and behind the scenes.
Even though Governor Abbot lifted the mask mandate and all other COVID related restrictions last Wednesday, the organizer of PBCC chose to enforce all safety protocols which was a relief because the show was packed, at 6 feet apart of course. We had 9 clients at the event; David Ankrum, Dickey Beer, David J. Fielding, Kenny James (co-booked with our friends at CelebWorx), Walter Jones, Dmitriy Karas, Kevin Sorbo, Austin St. John & Tiffany Vollmer.
Our community never ceases to amaze me. Pop culture fandom is like no other. I didn’t see one attendee not wearing a mask. This community and culture cares about and respects one another. There is no one ‘group’ that attends conventions. Black, white, male, female, gay, straight, Trekkie, furry everyone comes and everyone welcomes one another. It’s a wonderful sight to see after a year of people arguing and being rude to one another over varying opinions on masks, politics and other controversial topics at every turn.
Lastly I’d like to clarify a misunderstanding on my part. The photos of Waydurk & Regineer Teed on the banner we had designed for Dmitriy are from ‘Solo’ which were portrayed by Harley Durst & Dee Tails, both great performers in the UK. I forgot Dmitriy sent those to me for reference only because he portrayed those two characters in The Mandalorian, but that those two images are not actually of him. We are trying to source the correct images. I pulled those from the table and we’ve had his promotional banner/graphic redesigned. No disrespect was meant to Harley or Dee.”
