Anthony Daniels isn’t known for missing a Star Wars Celebration and this year was no exception. Daniels took part in the Star Wars: Episode IX panel (or should I say the Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker panel?) as well as several autograph signing sessions. The galaxy’s favorite protocol droid also revealed the name of his upcoming book “I Am C-3PO-The Inside Story” which will be released on November 5, 2019 by DK Publishing.
Daniels hosted a panel titled “Anthony Daniels Droidography” on Sunday afternoon on the Galaxy Stage. During the panel Daniels warned fans about the prevalence of forgeries, examples of which he shares on his website.
“On one of the pages you’ll see “The Dark Side” and on that page is about 400-450 forgeries of my autograph that people pay huge amounts of money for.”
As many collectors are well aware a certificate of authenticity is no guarantee that your autograph is not a forgery and no authentication company can ever guarantee 100% of their opinions on the authenticity of an autograph are accurate. Daniels illustrated this while showing the crowd examples of his forged autograph.
“There is a major authentication society that said ‘Yes, we authenticate this as Anthony’s autograph.’ One time I was involved with the FBI in prosecuting someone who was forging everyone’s autograph. Don’t trust certificates of authenticity. They are as rubbish as the autograph they go with.”
C-3PO has long been the voice of reason for the heroes of the Rebellion, often reminding them of the dangers they were about to find themselves facing if they weren’t careful. It’s no surprise that Daniels offers the same advice to us when purchasing autographs online.
“Please, please be careful. If you don’t know the providence of the (autograph) be very careful.”
