WELCOME BACK TO THE CON LIFE

In the city of Puyallup, Washington, home to the Washington State Fair, is a convention that while only in its third year has managed to become a favorite for many in the Seattle area.

Washington State SummerCon, like most cons of 2020, had to cancel their show planned for June of 2020, but came back strong with three shows for the summer of 2021. There was “Almost SummerCon” on May 8th, a toy show combined with a few entertainment and comic guests, the main “SummerCon” showthe weekend of June 18th-20th with several Star Wars guests, and the final show “SummerCon Again” the weekend of August 7th and 8th, which also had Star Was guests.

SummerCon in June had the privilege of welcoming Katee Sackhoff, Emily Swallow, Sam Witwer, Daniel Logan, Dickey Beer, and legendary Star Wars author Timothy Zahn. The consensus amongst all of the guests was that they were so happy to be back at a convention!

Katee did a special VIP panel and then another panel the next day with Emily Swallow. It was the first time that the two ladies had met. They seemed to have a great time on stage together and shared fun stories of working on the set of The Mandalorian and with “baby.” Katee was shocked to learn that she is the first character who got to play her voice acting character later in live action.

Sam Witwer also had a great panel where he enthralled the audience with lively stories of voicing Darth Maul. He too was excited to be back at cons and when I presented him with the Darth Maul Clone Wars Season 7 Funko Pop to sign, it was the first time he had seen that pop and loved it.

Daniel Logan and Dickey Beer did a Boba Fett panel together and the two men were full of incredible stories and so much energy.

All five of them were also doing photo ops and spent a lot of time at the autograph table chatting with their fans.

Timothy Zahn also did a panel and had a table set up where he was graciously signing books free of charge. He was happy to have long conversations with folks about his work and the different inspirations. He also loved taking pictures with his readers.

“SummerCon Again” in August brought out Ron Perlman who voiced Gha’ Nachkt in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. And to the delight of Star Wars fans, Giancarlo Esposito was able to make the August show. Giancarlo was only able to attend for one day, but he made sure that everyone who stood in his line was able to get an autograph, a picture op, and get a chance to talk to him. He was incredibly present for each and every fan, and willing to do all sorts of fun poses for the photos. He also had a panel where he shared great stories about portraying villainy so convincingly.

Garrison Titan, the local 501st Garrison. was at the show with their members taking pictures with attendees and also different props set up for people to take their pictures with.

SummerCon loves Star Wars and makes an effort to bring in some great guests. It is a smaller con, so the autographs don’t feel rushed and the guests are more relaxed and happy to chat. It was a fabulous time!
