Today we are reviewing the purchase of a signed copy of Star Wars: The High Republic: A Test of Courage from Caprichos Books, located in Bel Air, Maryland.

After purchasing a signed copy of The Light of the Jedi from the Charles Soule website, I started searching for other signed books from The High Republic line. The next book that was available was A Test of Courage by Justina Ireland. Its a young adult novel that goes a little something like this:

“Vernestra Rwoh has just become a Jedi Knight at age fifteen, but her first real assignment feels an awful lot like babysitting. She’s been charged with supervising eleven-year old aspiring inventor Avon Starros on a cruiser headed to the dedication of a wondrous new space station called Starlight Beacon.

But soon into their journey, bombs go off aboard the cruiser. While the adult Jedi try to save the ship, Vernestra, Avon, Avon’s droid J-6, a Jedi Padawan, and an ambassador’s son make it to an escape shuttle, but communications are out and supplies are low. They decide to land on a nearby moon, which offers shelter but not much more. And unbeknownst to them, danger lurks in the forest…”

I found signed copies of A Test of Courage available on the Caprichos Books website. An independent book store in Bel Air, Maryland with a great story (read more about them HERE) they were offering the autographed books for $14.99.

I placed my order on February 9th, which came to $19.99 and was to be sent via media mail.

My order arrived on February 24th in a reinforced a pink bubble mailer. When I saw the mailer in the mailbox I assumed it was for my daughter, but pleasantly surprised to see it was my book. I enjoyed the change of pace from the typical white or tan mailers that typically arrive for me.

The package was sent via USPS Media Mail on February 17th. I found the book to be in perfect condition upon opening.

I realized as I began to open the book that I could not remember if the signature was on a book plate or directly on the book, or if I had even known that information when I ordered.

Although I would always prefer to have my signatures directly in the book on the title page, I’ve come to expect during Covid that the signatures would most likely be on a book plate. That was not the case for this book and it was signed exactly where I like.

Also included in the book was a post card of The Hays House in Bel Air with a hand-written note thanking me for supporting an indie book shop. I loved the personal touch of that note.

Much of autograph collecting has lost any type of human interaction during the pandemic. That small note and the postcard depicting something unique to their area gave me a small slice of connection that I have been missing in my collecting over the last year.

Caprichos Books currently has 15 signed copies of A Test of Courage in stock with more on the way from the publisher. They also have live pre-orders for signed copies of Justina Ireland’s upcoming High Republic titles The Edge of Balance (June 8) and Out of the Shadows (July 27.)
