THE NEXT GENERATION OF MULTI-SIGNED STORMTROOPER PROJECTS

I always enjoy seeing other collectors’ “TK” pieces .  Those pieces with a single stormtrooper, either full body or a head shot, with a great deal of signing space filled with all the various people who wore the white suit in the Original Trilogy.  I personally do not collect these pieces, because they are best done on 11×14 or larger prints and I, more or less, stick to 8x10s. It occurred to me while watching The Force Awaakens that people will now be launching the next generation of these pieces. Begun the “FN” multi-signed collecting has.

I wanted to give collectors a jump start on their pieces and did a bit of research into who actually wore the suits. This is in no way an exhaustive listing of stormtroopers. Considering there is still detective work going on and new people being found for the Original Trilogy, we have years ahead of us to unravel as many stormtrooper identies as possible from the Sequel Trilogy.   There are many rumors out there, but accurate facts are integral to the autograph collecting hobby and community. Where appropriate, I have included some information from Wookieepedia which may provide clues to specific scenes for certain actors, but it is should not be considered official until we have confirmation from a Lucasfilm representative.

Costume Designer: Michael Kaplan

From Vanity Fair: “J.J. wanted them to look like stormtroopers at a glance but also be different enough to kind of wow people and get them excited about the new design.”

FN-2187 (“Finn”):  John Boyega

[[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_crop”,”fid”:”22136″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”id”:”media_crop_8375368281933″,”media_crop_h”:”0″,”media_crop_image_style”:”large”,”media_crop_instance”:”14596″,”media_crop_rotate”:”0″,”media_crop_scale_h”:”0″,”media_crop_scale_w”:”0″,”media_crop_w”:”0″,”media_crop_x”:”0″,”media_crop_y”:”0″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”}}]]

From Variety: “He’s a Stormtrooper on the run, so I think most of his decisions are based on adrenaline. Like, “Okay, you know what? I’m just going to get this blaster and run away.” And it’s nice, but that changes gradually, and it will be good for people to discover that change.”

FN-2199:  David Acord (voice) Liang Yang (stunts)

[[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_crop”,”fid”:”22141″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”id”:”media_crop_2487803345443″,”media_crop_h”:”0″,”media_crop_image_style”:”large”,”media_crop_instance”:”14601″,”media_crop_rotate”:”0″,”media_crop_scale_h”:”0″,”media_crop_scale_w”:”0″,”media_crop_w”:”0″,”media_crop_x”:”0″,”media_crop_y”:”0″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”}}]]

I recently reported that David Acord had confirmed other people involved with this charcter, especially the sound effects used for the Z6 Baton. “Acord recently confirmed that the sound effects from the Z6 Baton were a collaborative effort between him and Skywalker Sound sound designer and re-recording mixer Gary Rydstrom and that he used a “hint of Magna Guard staff from Ep. 3 courtesy of Ben Burtt…it only made sense (to me) to reference that tech/sound in some way since he’s deflecting saber strikes.”

This announcement from Starwars.com prooved inconvenient for one actor who had laid claim on social media that he was actually wearing the suit during this specific scene.  23-year old Alex Rolt, who will forever be mentioned in the same breath as Hal Wamsley and others who falsely claimed to play part in the GFFA, has since recanted, reportedly stating on Twitter “Sorry for doing this to all the fans.  Was a joke that got out of hand.  My career is tarnished.”  Thankfully, for fans and autograph collectors, this information came out before Rolt had a chance to make it to the autograph circuit.

FN-3181:  Michael Giocchino

[[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_crop”,”fid”:”22146″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”id”:”media_crop_3038353610675″,”media_crop_h”:”0″,”media_crop_image_style”:”large”,”media_crop_instance”:”14606″,”media_crop_rotate”:”0″,”media_crop_scale_h”:”0″,”media_crop_scale_w”:”0″,”media_crop_w”:”0″,”media_crop_x”:”0″,”media_crop_y”:”0″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”}}]]

From Wookieepedia: “FN-3181 was a stormtrooper in the First Order during their conflict with the Resistance. He was one of sixty troopers deployed from the Resurgent-class Star Destroyer Finalizer, under the command of Captain Phasma on the planet Jakku as part of an Assault on Tuanul on the village of Tuanul, where they hoped to locate part of a map leading to the Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. The troopers killed or captured the residents of the village, including Lor San Tekka, whose execution by the Force-sensitive Kylo Ren prompted the Resistance pilot Poe Dameron to attack him with a blaster. Using the Force, Ren frozen both the blaster bolt and Dameron, who FN-3181 and another trooper then grabbed. The pair dragged Dameron over to Ren and threw him at the Force-user’s feet. Ren then questioned the pilot, before taking him prisoner and ordering the stormtroopers to execute all remaining villagers.[1]”

FN-9330:  Nigel Godrich

From Wookieepedia: “FN-9330 was a stormtrooper in the First Order during their conflict with the Resistance.[1] During the Battle of Starkiller Base, FN-9330 was stationed at the Base. As the stormtrooper boarded the Transport Compartment, the door opened, and Han Solo, Finn, and Chewbacca appeared. He fumbled for his blaster but Chewie shot first, and the trooper flew back. Chewie then moved him out of sight to avoid detection at the Base.”

FN-2003: Unknown

If you’re like me, and watched the The Force Awakens World Premiere Red Carpet event live online, you may remember Sam Witwer playfully remarking to Social Stage host David Collins “I hear that there’s a bit of an audio Easter Egg.  Do you play stormtroopers in this movie” to which Collins responded “Maybe, are you?” Witwer wryly stated “Am I a stormtropper in this movie?  That’s ridiculous.”  Their interactions were among my favorite moments of the night, and after seeing both of their names listed as “Additional Voices” in the closing credits, I reached out to Collins and asked if they had indeed provided voices for stormtroopers in the film.

“I can confirm that I’m the trooper with the black shoulder pad that says to Kylo Ren “Sir! The droid was spotted heading west… With a girl.’ Collins explained. “Sam and I have a conversation as stormtroopers (about TC-17s) while Rey is sneaking around, and I believe Sam says that they’re splitting up.”

“From “Blast That X-wing!” to “Traitor!”: The Voices of Star Wars: The Force Awakens” by Matthew Wood for Starwars.com

When David Collins confirmed his voice roles for me he mentioned that I should talk to Matthew Wood because he was working on a piece to identify all the specific roles for the “Additional “Voices” credited in the film.  On January 25th Wood’s feature was published on Starwars.com and included the identity of many stormtroopers (as well as many other characters.)  Here is a listing of the stormtroopers, but you can, and should, read the whole story HERE.

Stormtroopers: “Blast that X-wing!” “Over there, over there!” — Sam Witwer and David Collins

Stormtrooper: “Keep moving!” “Stay here!” — Matthew Wood

Stormtrooper: “Nothing, Sir.” “Nothing here, go ahead!” — David Acord

Stormtrooper: “Check over there.” “Fan out!” “Copy that, 1138.” —  James Arnold Taylor and Sam Witwer

Stormtrooper: “Call in the airstrike!” — Matthew Wood

Stormtrooper (radio prompts Rey to first see trooper): “FN-417, hold position.” — Matt Lanter

Stormtrooper (alerted to Rey’s position, fires from castle): “Blast ‘em!” — Matthew Wood

Stormtrooper (alerts Kylo Ren at castle): “Sir, the droid was spotted heading west, with a girl!” — David Collins

Stormtrooper (fights Finn with riot baton): “Traitor!” (fight efforts) — David Acord

Stormtrooper (apprehends Finn): “Don’t move! TK-338, we have targets in custody!” — Fred Tatasciore

Stormtrooper (reacts to incoming Resistance fighters): “We have incoming at 28.6! Move!” — Kevin Smith

Stormtroopers (getting in formation for Resistance attack): “Dispatch artillery!” “Go, go, move!” “Scramble all squads!” (x2), “Anti-air cover on lakefront position!” — Michael Donovan and Sam Witwer

Stormtrooper (running from rock wall incoming fighters): “Go, go, go!” — Sam Witwer

Stormtrooper (into comlink): “Request air support!” — Pip Anderson

Stormtrooper (interrupts Kylo Ren and Rey in forest): “Sir, Resistance fighters. We need more troops.” — Matthew Wood

Stormtrooper (gesturing a command at Kylo’s ship): “Heavy troopers.” “Pull back to tree line.” — Kat Sheridan

Stormtrooper (to Kylo Ren in corridor): “Sir, sensors triggered in hangar 718, we are searching the area.” — Verona Blue

Stormtrooper (as elevator opens, revealing Chewie): “Hey!” — Nigel Godrich

Stormtroopers (as Rey sneaks out toward ledge): “You checked out the new T-17s? The T-17s, as far as I can tell, are a great improvement. Yeah, that’s what they tell you, but believe me, they don’t hold up. They don’t? No…” — David Collins and Sam Witwer

Stormtroopers (running as group before Finn sneaks in): “We think they may be splitting up.” — Sam Witwer

Stormtroopers (running as group before Finn sneaks in): “Heading to quadrants four and five.” — Devon Libran

Stormtroopers (searching under stairs, radio voiced): “Check over there!” “This way!” “Roger that.” — Matt Lanter and James Arnold Taylor

Stormtroopers (aiming at Han Solo in Oscillator): Very distorted commands — Devon Libran and Sam Witwer

These are all the Stormtroopers either creditied in the film or otherwise officially announced by Lucasfilm.  You may remember the Behind-the Scenes” trailer that was released at San Diego Comic Con this year (if you don’t you can watch it HERE.)

Verona Blue: The First Female Stormtrooper

“Sir, sensors triggered in hanger 718.  We’re scanning the area.”  This line was spoken by a stormtrooper to Kylo Ren during one key scene.  It could have been said by any number of stormtroopers, or clone troopers for that matter, from any of the films, but one thing makes this line truly unique.

It was said by Toronto native and long standing 501st Legion member Verona Blue, making her the voice of the first female stormtrooper in Star Wars (Captian Phasma notwithstanding.)  Blue was recently a guest on the 501stCast and talked about her experiences working on the film. You can hear the episode in it’s entirety (dated January 5th) HERE.

“I got a text message from Matt Wood saying would you like to do more voice work” Blue told hosts Joe Mignano and Nicky Blum. “I said ‘Yes, for what?’ and he said ‘We need a femaile stormtrooper.’  I went back in, all of this was done at Fox in Los Angeles.  I was given about six pages of dialogue and recorded all of it.  And it was everything from First Order offiicers, stormtroopers, stormtroopers in battle, Resistance PA announcements, First Order PA announcements, X-Wing pilots.  That took about an hour and I went home and crossed my fingers that it was going to make it into the final cut. About three days after they announced they had finished the final cut of the film I got another text from Matt Wood saying that I was the first female stormtrooper.”

*Edit: Although Verona Blue provides the voice of the first female stormtrooper it should be noted that stuntwoman Tracey Eddon played a stormtrooper during the Endor scenes in Return of the Jedi.

Much has been reported about Daniel Craig’s secret cameo in The Force Awakens since Simon Pegg first told the The Independent “I wasn’t a Stormtrooper. Daniel Craig, he was a Stormtrooper. … I shouldn’t have said that.” in May of 2015. The Independent also quotes “an insider” who stated “Daniel asked for some sort of secret cameo role – and was happy to have his name left off the posters. Fans will love trying to work out which covered up character is him.”  It would have been easy enough for Craig to make his way over to where The film was being filmed, since he was filming the Bond film Spectre at Pinewood Studios at the same time.

In an October 2015 Entertainment Weekly piece written by Chris Lee, the James Bond star made efforts to squash the notion that he was in the latest Star Wars film.  ““Why would I ever bother doing something like that?” Craig told Lee. “F—ing hell! Pffft. Play an extra in another movie.”

Director J.J. Abrams told IGN in a December 18, 2015 interview “The only thing I’ll say to that is why would James Bond ever want to play a stormtrooper over God knows how many days it took to shoot that scene.  That to me is sort of the obvious answer.  If you’ve seen this guys day job I don’t know why he’d trade that in for the suit and the claustrophobia.  And it’s very hot in there, as John Boyega will tell you again, again and again.”

The Sun quoted a source on January 2, 2016 as saying “It was just going to be a ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ cameo but in the end he’s in a very memorable scene.”

The specific confirmation that Craig portayed the Stormtrooper from the “Jedi Mind Trick” scene has come from “multiple sources close to The Force Awakens who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to speak publicly.”

Did he portray that specific stormtrooper?  More than likely.  For autograph collecting purposes I would be much more confortable spending my money (or more importantly, suggesting you spend yours) hearing this confirmation from an official source, rather than based on “unnamed sources who were not authorized to speak” about which part he played.

*Edit (1/25/16)  After reading Matthew Wood’s feature “From “Blast That X-wing!” to “Traitor!”: The Voices of Star Wars: The Force AwakensI noticed that there was no mention of Daniel Craig’s stormtrooper.  Wood’s feature specifically lists those actors who were listed in the credits as “Additional Voices” which did not include Craig’s name.  I reached out to David Collins and Matthew Wood about that particular scene and Wood responded. “Vanity Fair and JJ confirmed that one , yep.”  I am now satisfied that Craig did provide the voice of this stormtrooper.
